What are the requirements to use the 5 meg free web space?

Anyone can use the 5 meg space for their web site development. The only stipulations are to register with NetGold, and to include two return links to Texas Clear Lake Community. Texas Clear Lake Community will provide one free link to your web site. Your web site can be for personal or business use. See the return links explanation page for additional details.

What happens if I need additional web space?

Contact the site Webmaster by e-mail, or contact NetGold by e-mail or phone. Advise the following:

You will then be contacted by a site representative to set up your site requirements.

Are there any age restrictions in the Texas Clear Lake Community?

There are no age restrictions on the web site. It is intended to be a site of personal creative expression for kids of all ages - even 100 year old kids!

Are there any restrictions on the personal use of the web site?

The web site is a public place, utilized by adults and children, and common sense should be applied in the planning, set up and materials used on your site. Illegal activities are prohibited, as well as pornographic, extreme violence or other offensive or suggestive materials. There are plenty of areas already on the Internet for these activities, and not here. Your web site will be subject to possible occasional review. Any materials or use not deemed to be acceptable will be removed and/or violators will be advised and/or canceled at our discretion. Remember that everyone's opinion is different in interpretation, and if you think it might not be acceptable, please don't use it. Instead, please find another more acceptable method to express your web site. We are not trying to inhibit creativity. We simply want to channel it in a positive direction that will be beneficial toward the growth of the whole community. We hope that common sense will prevail, and we appreciate your efforts toward this endeavor!

What should I do if I find a web site in the Texas Clear Lake Community that I feel is offensive or inappropriate?

If you find a site that is offensive to you, first consider the acceptability of the materials to other residents in the Texas Clear Lake Community. If you still feel it to be offensive, advise the Webmaster so it can be officially checked out. Your input will be held confidential.

Are there any restrictions on the business use of the web site?

The same comments apply to businesses as apply to individuals. In addition, at this time web space cannot be sub-contracted without the written permission of the Webmaster. Any special uses of web space are subject to review and possible additional costs. Sub-contracting or use beyond the scope of use implied herein will subject the resident to possible cancellation at the discretion of the Webmaster. Again, the scope of intent is for individuals and /or businesses to have access to low cost Internet space to express their personalities as part of the local Internet community, and to allow a medium for exchange of personal creativity and information.

Can I have more than one web site in the community?

Individuals are allowed up to one personal and one business site in the Texas Clear Lake Community, subject to the discretion of the Webmaster. Since additional space is relatively inexpensive, we hope people won't abuse this priviledge. Additional sites or space would be available at a low cost.

What should I put on my web site?

Anything that appropriately expresses who you are, how your business meets the needs of the community or any other reasonable information. Personal examples could be your hobbies, photos of your pet or garden, information about your boat, places you have visited, poetry, inventions, information on how to breed a prize winning animal, make pottery or how to repair a 1961 VW Beetle. Look for a community category to set up camp, and then dig in! If you don't see a catagory you want, ask the Webmaster to provide a new catagory. Business examples would be to describe your business, your products, your business philosophy, provide easy access for customer comments or reservations, show photos of your staff, show your location and more! Scan our listings pages for real examples! Possibly form a travel club or bowling team, start your own consulting business or sell cars on the Internet. LET YOUR IMAGINATION RUN AMUCK!

Do you have dial up or direct access connection available so that I can get on the Internet?

Presently we do not have dial up or direct access available. There are many low cost ISP's (Internet Service Providers) available, and we are planning to expand to include this capability in the future. In the mean time, check out some of our businesses represented on our sites or on our "links" pages.

How do I get my photos or artwork scanned to put on the web site?

Of course, buying a scanner is one option. Low cost scanners are available starting under $100.00 in black and white and from $150.00 in color. Watch the specification! Some low cost scanners have better resolution than the higher priced name brands! Additionally, if you don't want to put out the expense for a scanner, send your pictures (enclose a postage paid return envelope) or bring them to us, and we'll scan the first two free!

My scanned pictures take up a lot of space and slow down access to my web site.

Pictures and artwork are a great way to spice up a web site, but be careful about size and resolution. A full color page in high resolution can take 15 megs of space, or more! However, judicious selection of size and resolution can result in great prints for under a meg, and most in less than 100 K of space. Remember, large files require long load times when surfing the web. Try to keep pictures and other images small to minimize download time when people visit your web site. A good way to keep download time short is to use a "thumbnail" size print in the main body of your site, and put the larger picture on a separate page that a "surfer" can go to if they like what they see in the "thumbnail".

What is a domain name account?

Everyone on the Internet must have an address so that people can find you. As an individual, an address could be "myname@ngold.com" for e-mail. As an individual this is usually sufficient for your requirements. However, as a business, most people want to have individualized address names. These individual address names are called "Domain Names". For NetGold, the name "ngold.com" was chosen. This is NetGold's domain name. The name "ngold.com" has been registered with Internic. Internic was set up specifically for keeping track of names and their computer addresses on the Internet. Even if NetGold were to change computer addresses, the Internet name would remain "ngold.com". The new location would be registered with Internic, and it wouldn't matter to anyone trying to find NetGold. They would still look for NetGold by the address "ngold.com". However, if I no longer worked for NetGold, my individual address would change. The new address would become "myname@newaddress.ext". If people didn't know my new address, they wouldn't be able to find me. Registering with Internic is similar to registering an assumed name with your local city or state.
